8 Tips for Backpacking Mount Whitney

Mount Whitney is the tallest mountain peak in the lower 48 states. At 14,505 feet, it stands in the Sierra Nevada mountain range right West of the small town of Lone Pine, California. Here are some tips to make sure your trip is absolutely amazing!

Day 4 of our Mount Whitney trek was really quite simple, but we had reached the summit, we were tired, and we were ready to be off the mountain – it was no longer about taking pictures and enjoying our beautiful surroundings.

Day 3 was the day we would finally make it to the summit of Mount Whitney, but not without a lot of effort to get there. The last 2 days had been excruciatingly long and arduous, and we knew today would be no easier, but this was the point of our whole trip – to make it to the summit!

Today’s hike to Guitar Lake, and towards Mount Whitney, was beautiful, but rough. Real rough. In a completely different way from the day before. Rough enough that we barely took any photos, and all I can imagine is that we were just far too tired to care.

We started day 1 of our Mount Whitney backpacking trip towards New Army Pass (note, you can also take Cottonwood Pass – both will get you to the same place). The camping area we wanted by Lower Soldier Lake was supposedly just on the other side of the pass, and we were ready to go (HA! Idiots.)! There were some thunderclouds in the distance so we all discussed procedures if a storm came through (span out, get low, don’t be the highest point in your area, etc.) and away we went!
